Spending Thanksgiving in the North Georgia Mountains

There is no shortage of holiday festivities in the North Georgia Mountains this year. Our local towns are planning carefully to offer some safe, social distancing opportunities for Thanksgiving celebrations this year. Here are some of the events that are planned for Thanksgiving week, which include fun runs, Black Friday shopping, and holiday lighting celebrations throughout our small mountain communities. Please note that some businesses may require masks for the safety of yourself and other guests.  Make plans to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday season in North Georgia!

Thanksgiving Holiday Events in North Georgia

  • Dahlonega Turkey Trot and Fun Run – The 4th Annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 5k and Fun Run will take place once again in Dahlonega. Join them for a morning run (or walk) through beautiful Camp Glisson and work up your appetite for the big meal of the day! Proceeds of this race will benefit Lumpkin Family Connection. All participants will receive a t-shirt as well as a buff.
  • Black Friday Shopping – From the North Georgia Premium Outlets and the quaint local shops in downtown Dahlonega, to the stores on the square in Dawsonville and the eclectic opportunities for shopping in Blue Ridge, make the most of your Black Friday Shopping experience Thanksgiving week in North Georgia.  Most retailers are open, but some do require masks.
  • Dawsonville Rotary Community Thanksgiving Dinner – On Monday, Nov. 23, the Rotary Club of Dawson County will host a free drive-through Thanksgiving dinner open to all in the community. The annual event is usually a community gathering where citizens can sit and eat together, but it will be a little different this year due to COVID-19. Attendees will remain in their vehicles and drive through the line. They will be asked how many meals they need, which will be loaded into their cars for them to take home to enjoy. All meals will be served to-go and ready-to-eat, with no further preparation or heating required. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Park gymnasium.
  • Explore North Georgia – Thanksgiving in North Georgia is a great time to get out and explore. From a leisurely trail ride via horseback through the beautiful Fall scenery to a hike along the Appalachian Trail or to see the top of Amicalola Falls, the weather is perfect this time of year to get out and enjoy!
  • Holiday Celebration and Live Nativity at North Georgia ZooThe North Georgia Zoo in Cleveland, GA has a variety of fun festivities for the entire family during Thanksgiving week. From the Holiday Celebration and Live Nativity to hayrides, kids’ activities, Christmas music, and more! There is plenty of family fun at the North Georgia Zoo.
